Dr. John Conway’s talk will focus on the fifty years of Tibetan refugee life, the continuous dilemmas faced by exiles, and the question of what this community will do when the present Dalai Lama is no longer there to lead them.
Speaker bio:
Dr. John Conway is a Professor Emeritus of History and International Relations at the University of British Columbia, a founding member of TRAS in 1962, and TRAS president in the 1970s. He has been involved in numerous refugee affairs. As well as his work with Tibetan refugees, Dr. Conway assisted Hungarian refugees in the late 1950s, Vietnamese refugees in 1979-80, Afghan refugees, and student refugees as part of UBC’s student refugee sponsorship program. In 2010 he was awarded the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster. He recently gave a five-lecture series on Tibetan issues at UBC which was highly successful.
Come and celebrate the launch of TRAS’s 50th birthday celebrations with a stimulating talk and discussion. These are the issues which started TRAS in 1962 and are still just as relevant today.
All proceeds from this event will go to the Tuting Adult Literacy Project in Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India.
